How Often Should I Backup My WordPress Site?

Short answer: more often than you think, and automatically. Here is the reasoning, so you can pick the right schedule for your site.

The rule of thumb

Back up as often as your site changes. Ask yourself one question: if the site died right now, how much work could you afford to lose?

  • Online store or membership site: daily at minimum, and ideally more often for the database. Orders and signups arrive around the clock, and every one of them lives in the database.
  • Business site with a blog: daily is the safe default. You update pages, publish posts and receive form entries more often than you realise.
  • Brochure site that rarely changes: weekly can be enough, but only if you also back up before every update.

The backup before every update

Most broken WordPress sites break during an update. A backup taken minutes before a plugin, theme or core update is the cheapest insurance there is. If the update goes wrong, you roll back quickly instead of rebuilding for days.

Three rules that matter more than frequency

  • Store backups off the server. If your host has a bad day, backups sitting on the same server go down with the site.
  • Keep more than one. A single backup can be corrupt, or taken after the problem started. Keep a rolling set so you can reach back to a clean copy.
  • Test the restore. This is the step almost everyone skips. A backup only counts once you have proven it restores.

Who is checking yours?

Every WP Guard protection plan includes automated backups with restores that are actually tested. Our team watches that the backups run, that they verify, and that they restore when it counts, so a bad day becomes a rollback, not a rebuild.
